Which specialist performs hydrotherapy?

Short answer
Hydrotherapy is usually delivered by a physiotherapist trained in aquatic rehabilitation, who adapts exercises to your condition and mobility.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main provider
- Physiotherapist trained in aquatic rehabilitation
- Treatment setting
- A supervised therapeutic pool
- Possible support
- Land exercises or a home programme
What the specialist does
The physiotherapist assesses strength, balance, joint movement, pain and confidence in water before choosing exercises. Warm water and buoyancy can reduce the load on some joints, making controlled movement easier for people recovering from injury, surgery or long-term stiffness. The therapist remains responsible for progression, technique and safety during the session. Hydrotherapy is structured rehabilitation, rather than simply swimming or exercising independently in a pool.
How to arrange a session
Tell the physiotherapist about wounds, skin conditions, bladder or bowel concerns, seizures, heart or breathing problems and fear of water. Ask whether you need medical clearance, what clothing or equipment is required, and whether an assistant should be present. Follow instructions about entering and leaving the pool, hydration and rest. The programme may combine water-based exercises with a home plan or land-based physiotherapy.
When to pause and seek care
Stop the session and seek medical advice for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, a new neurological change or pain that is sudden and intense. Contact the therapy team about worsening swelling, an untreated wound or feeling unwell before returning to the pool.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which pool exercises match your diagnosis, how progress will be measured, what symptoms mean you should stop, and when water therapy should give way to more demanding land exercises.

Questions people ask
Is hydrotherapy the same as swimming?
No. Hydrotherapy uses prescribed, supervised exercises selected for a specific condition or recovery goal.
Can hydrotherapy start after surgery?
Timing depends on healing, wounds, weight-bearing instructions and medical clearance, so the treating team should set the start date.
