Which specialist performs an HPV test?

During a cervical screening visit, the clinician uses a speculum to see the cervix and collects a small sample of cells. The laboratory checks the sample for high-risk types of human papillomavirus. HPV testing is different from a test for every sexually transmitted infection, and a positive result does not by itself diagnose cancer. Your clinician will explain whether the sample also needs cervical cell assessment.

Tell the clinic about pregnancy, unusual bleeding, pelvic pain, recent cervical procedures, or medicines that affect bleeding. Ask whether you should avoid vaginal products or intercourse before the appointment, because local instructions can vary. Bring previous screening results if available. After sampling, mild spotting can occur; use the clinic's advice about monitoring it and receiving results.

Arrange medical review for bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, bleeding after menopause, persistent unusual discharge, or pelvic pain. Seek urgent care for severe pain, fainting, fever, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms need assessment even if an HPV test is negative or a screening appointment is already planned.

Ask whether HPV testing is due, whether cervical cells will be checked at the same time, when results should arrive, what a positive result means, and which follow-up appointment or examination would be recommended.
