External cephalic version, often called ECV or turning a breech baby, involves an obstetrician placing hands on the abdomen and applying controlled pressure to guide the baby. The baby's position and heart rate are checked before and after the attempt, and the maternity team discusses whether the procedure is suitable for you.

Because this takes place in a maternity setting, the team can respond if you or the baby needs assessment. A midwife may assist with monitoring, preparation, and support, while the obstetrician leads the procedure.

Ask your obstetrician why ECV is being offered, how the appointment will be organised, and what other birth plans may be considered if the baby remains breech. Tell the team about pain, bleeding, fluid loss, contractions, or reduced fetal movement before the appointment.
