Nerve conduction testing measures how electrical signals travel along selected nerves using skin electrodes and brief stimulation. An EMG assesses electrical activity in muscles, sometimes with a fine needle electrode. Together, the tests can help localise problems affecting a nerve, nerve root, or muscle. The clinician interprets the findings alongside your symptoms, examination, and medical history; the report is not a diagnosis by itself.

Wear loose clothing and keep the skin free of creams or oils on the test day. Tell the clinician about a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, blood-thinning medicine, bleeding problems, or skin infection. Bring relevant scans and referral details if requested. You may feel brief stimulation or local muscle discomfort, so arrange time afterward to rest if your muscles feel tender.

The test itself usually causes temporary sensations, but contact the service if bleeding continues, a puncture site becomes increasingly red or swollen, or you develop fever.
