Which specialist performs dermoscopy?

A dermatoscope is a handheld device that magnifies a lesion and uses lighting that helps the clinician see structures below the surface. The dermatologist compares features such as colour, shape, borders, and internal patterns rather than relying only on an unaided view. Dermoscopy can support assessment of moles, freckles, and other spots, but it does not replace a full skin examination or tissue testing when a lesion needs removal.

Make a note of when the spot first appeared and whether it has changed in size, shape, colour, texture, or symptoms. Tell the dermatologist about personal or family skin-cancer history, previous biopsies, and medicines that affect bleeding or immunity. Bring photographs showing earlier appearance if available. The clinician may document the lesion, compare it with other spots, monitor it over time, or recommend biopsy depending on the findings.

Arrange prompt assessment for a spot that is changing, bleeding without a clear injury, repeatedly crusting, persistently itching, or developing a new uneven colour or border. A sore that does not heal also warrants examination. These signs are reasons to seek evaluation, not proof of cancer. Urgent assessment is especially sensible when a change is rapid or the lesion is difficult to monitor, such as on the scalp or back.

Ask: What features did you see through the dermatoscope? Should the spot be photographed, monitored, or biopsied? How soon should it be reviewed? Which changes should make me return earlier? Should my skin be checked more broadly?
