Cupping uses cups placed on the skin to create suction. Dry cupping leaves the skin intact; wet cupping involves skin puncture and requires additional infection-control precautions. A physiotherapist should first assess the painful or stiff area, movement and treatment goals rather than applying cups without an examination. Cupping may be used alongside exercise, hands-on care or advice about activity.

Look for a licensed physiotherapist who has specific training in cupping and can explain the expected skin marks, hygiene process and alternatives. Tell the practitioner about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, diabetes, pregnancy, skin conditions, open wounds and reduced sensation before treatment. Do not place cups over broken or infected skin.

Seek medical advice if treated skin becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, very painful or produces discharge. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, fainting or signs of a severe allergic reaction. Persistent pain, new weakness or numbness also deserves an assessment for causes that cupping cannot diagnose.
