Cryolipolysis, sometimes called fat freezing, uses controlled cooling through an applicator placed on a selected area of fat beneath the skin. It is a body-contouring procedure, not a treatment for general weight loss or a substitute for care of a painful lump.

Before treatment, the clinician should examine skin, sensation, circulation and the tissue that will fit into the applicator. Cold-related disorders, a hernia near the area, reduced sensation, active skin problems or unexplained swelling may change the plan or make treatment unsuitable.

Ask who performs the assessment, how the applicator will be positioned, what sensations are expected, how the skin will be checked and who handles follow-up. Share medical conditions, medicines, prior procedures and any numbness or pain.
