Which specialist performs bone scan?

A small radioactive tracer is given, and imaging is performed after the tracer has had time to collect in areas of bone activity. The technologist positions you for the images and explains what to expect. The nuclear medicine physician interprets the images and sends a report to the clinician who requested the examination. A bone scan can show areas needing further evaluation, but it does not by itself provide a final diagnosis for every finding.

Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant, might be pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking medicines that may affect the appointment. Follow the centre's instructions about fluids, eating, and returning for images. Wear comfortable clothing, remove metal items when asked, and bring prior imaging reports. Ask when and how the requesting clinician will discuss the result.

Do not wait for a routine scan if you have sudden severe pain after an injury, a limb that looks deformed, inability to use the limb, new weakness, or rapidly spreading redness with fever. These symptoms may need urgent clinical assessment before imaging is arranged.

Ask why a bone scan is being requested, whether another test is also needed, how the tracer and imaging schedule will work, and which clinician will explain the report. Mention allergies, pregnancy possibility, and any difficulty lying still.
