When to worry about wrist pain with a scaphoid fracture

The scaphoid is a small wrist bone near the base of the thumb. Pain may be felt in that area and can continue while the bone heals. Healing can be difficult to judge from symptoms alone, so follow-up and any requested imaging matter even if discomfort improves. Increasing pain, new swelling, or pain after a fresh knock may signal movement at the fracture or another injury. Numb fingers, pale or blue fingers, or worsening tightness under a cast can indicate pressure on nerves or circulation.

Keep the wrist protected exactly as instructed and do not remove or adjust a cast or splint without advice. Avoid lifting, pushing, gripping, or returning to sport until your treating team confirms that it is appropriate. Keep the hand elevated if it is swollen and move free fingers gently unless told otherwise. Contact the fracture service if the support becomes wet, damaged, loose, or uncomfortably tight.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly increasing pain, numbness, inability to move the fingers, marked swelling, or fingers that become cold, pale, or blue. Arrange prompt review after another impact, if pain remains focused near the thumb side, or if follow-up has been missed. Do not use pain improvement as proof that the fracture has healed.
