When to worry about wrist pain with hand osteoarthritis

Hand osteoarthritis involves changes in joint cartilage and the surrounding bone and tissues. Pain and stiffness may be more noticeable after use or when starting movement, while swelling can make gripping and fine hand tasks harder. Symptoms can fluctuate. A sudden change is different from a familiar flare: a hot, red joint, fever, rapidly increasing swelling, or pain after a fall needs medical review. Numbness or weakness may point to nerve involvement rather than osteoarthritis alone.

During a flare, pace tasks, take short breaks, and use comfortable supports if a clinician or therapist has recommended them. Gentle movement within a tolerable range can help prevent stiffness; forcing a painful joint may aggravate it. Keep track of triggers, morning stiffness, swelling, and which tasks are affected. A clinician can tailor exercises, splint advice, and pain relief to your joints, health history, and daily needs.

Book an appointment when pain is persistent, increasingly limits work or self-care, or keeps disturbing sleep. Seek urgent assessment if the wrist is deformed after an injury, you cannot move or use the hand, or swelling appeared suddenly. Prompt care is also needed for redness, warmth, fever, new tingling, reduced sensation, or a noticeably weaker grip.
