When to worry about vertigo with labyrinthitis

Labyrinthitis affects the inner ear structures involved in balance and may also affect hearing. Most people with labyrinthitis notice vertigo, often alongside nausea, unsteadiness, or hearing changes. The spinning sensation can be intense and may make walking difficult. Because other problems can also cause vertigo, a sudden or unusual pattern needs clinical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Sit or lie in a safe place when spinning begins, move your head slowly, and use support when standing. Keep walkways clear and avoid driving, climbing, or operating machinery while balance is impaired. Note when episodes occur, how long they last, whether hearing changes, and whether vomiting prevents fluids. A clinician can assess your ears, hearing, balance, and neurological symptoms and discuss medicines or rehabilitation when suitable.

Get emergency help for facial drooping, one-sided weakness or numbness, new trouble speaking, severe sudden headache, fainting, chest pain, or new double vision. Seek prompt medical care if you cannot walk safely, keep vomiting, develop sudden hearing loss, or become increasingly drowsy. These signs may need a broader assessment because not every dangerous cause of dizziness begins with obvious ear pain.
