Short answer

Vaginal Odour is a very common presentation of Bacterial Vaginosis, but new, persistent, worsening, or painful odour should be assessed by a clinician.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common pattern
Odour may be stronger after sex or during a period.
Avoid
Douching and scented vaginal products.
Prompt review
Fever, pelvic pain, bleeding, or vomiting.

What the odour may mean

Bacterial vaginosis happens when the usual balance of vaginal bacteria changes. The odour may be stronger after sex or during a period, and discharge can look thin and greyish or white. Itching is not always present. Odour alone cannot confirm the cause because irritation, a retained tampon, and sexually transmitted infections can produce overlapping symptoms. A clinician may ask about discharge, discomfort, sexual health, pregnancy, and recent products or antibiotics, then choose an examination or swab if needed.

What to do now

Arrange an appointment if the smell does not settle, returns after treatment, or comes with unusual discharge. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and avoid sharing leftover medicine. Wash the outside gently with water or a mild, unscented cleanser; do not douche or use scented sprays inside the vagina. Keep the area dry, choose breathable underwear, and pause sex or use condoms if sex worsens irritation until you have advice.

When to seek care promptly

Seek prompt medical care for fever, pelvic or lower-abdominal pain, vomiting, pain during sex, bleeding outside your period, sores, or marked burning when urinating. Contact a maternity service promptly if you are pregnant and notice new odour, discharge, pain, bleeding, or reduced wellbeing. Go to urgent care for severe pain, fainting, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: Could this be bacterial vaginosis or another infection? Do I need a swab or sexual-health test? Which products should I avoid? When should symptoms improve, and what should I do if the odour returns?
