When to worry about vaginal itching with lichen sclerosus

Lichen sclerosus is an inflammatory skin condition that commonly affects the vulva and nearby skin. It may cause intense itching, soreness, fragile skin, pale patches, small splits, or pain with sex. Scratching can create further injury and make symptoms harder to settle. Itching may also have another cause, particularly if the pattern changes.

Use the treatment prescribed for lichen sclerosus exactly as directed and attend planned follow-up visits. Keep the area dry, avoid fragranced products and harsh washing, and choose loose clothing. A plain emollient may protect irritated outer skin if your clinician agrees. Try not to scratch; cool compresses and trimmed nails can reduce skin damage.

Arrange prompt review for a sore, ulcer, lump, thickened area, persistent bleeding, or a patch that changes colour or texture. Also seek advice if prescribed treatment no longer controls symptoms, urination becomes painful, or cracks keep reopening. Severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or feeling very unwell warrants urgent care.
