When to worry about urinary incontinence with a urinary tract infection

Inflammation in the urinary tract can make the bladder feel full sooner, causing urgency, frequent trips, burning, and accidental leakage. The infection may be in the bladder, but symptoms can become more serious if it reaches the kidneys. New leakage can have other causes too, so testing is useful when symptoms do not fit a simple infection or do not improve.

Arrange medical advice when leakage appears with burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or a new change in a person who is frail or has other health conditions. Follow prescribed treatment exactly and ask what to do if symptoms remain. Drink normally unless fluid restriction has been prescribed, rest, and keep the skin clean and dry after accidents.

Seek urgent care for fever with chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, marked weakness, confusion, fainting, blood in the urine, or inability to pass urine. Symptoms that worsen quickly or do not start settling after treatment also need reassessment. Pregnant people, children, older adults, and people with impaired immunity should seek advice promptly when infection symptoms occur.
