When to worry about sun sensitivity with photodermatitis

Photodermatitis is an inflammatory skin reaction linked with light. It may cause redness, itching, burning, bumps, blisters, or sharply outlined marks on exposed areas. Some reactions follow contact with a plant, fragrance, or product; others are influenced by a medicine or an underlying skin condition. The distribution and timing after exposure help a clinician identify the pattern.

Move out of direct light, cover exposed skin with clothing, and avoid suspected products until you receive advice. Cool compresses may soothe discomfort; do not break blisters or apply new creams without checking that they are suitable. Note the light source, contact substances, medicines, and delay before symptoms appeared. Keep photographs as the reaction evolves.

Arrange medical review when the reaction recurs, covers a larger area, persists despite avoiding light, or interferes with sleep or daily activity. Seek urgent care for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, severe skin pain, peeling, eye involvement, mouth sores, fever, or signs of infection such as increasing warmth and pus.
