When to worry about a sore throat with diphtheria

Diphtheria can inflame the throat and create a thick grey or white coating over the tonsils or back of the throat. The coating may bleed if disturbed. Neck swelling, fever, weakness, and enlarged glands can occur alongside the pain. Sore throat is a common presentation of Diphtheria; the symptom itself does not confirm the cause.

Arrange urgent medical assessment if diphtheria is suspected or has been diagnosed. Avoid scraping the throat coating, sharing cups or utensils, or having close contact with others until a clinician gives infection-control advice. Rest, take fluids in small sips, and use only medicines recommended for you. Tell the service about recent close contacts so they can advise on testing or preventive care.

Call emergency services immediately for difficult or noisy breathing, blue or grey lips, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck swelling, confusion, collapse, or severe weakness. Go urgently if throat pain is worsening with a muffled voice or if you cannot keep fluids down. Do not wait for the coating to clear before seeking help.

Ask whether you need throat testing, treatment to neutralise toxin, antibiotics, or monitoring in hospital. Check how long to avoid close contact, which household members need assessment, and what changes should prompt a return visit.
