When to worry about a skin rash with tinea versicolor

Tinea versicolor is a superficial yeast overgrowth that can create lighter, darker, pink, or tan patches with fine scale, often on the chest, back, shoulders, or neck. The colour difference may remain after the yeast is controlled because pigment recovery takes time. It is usually mildly itchy or not itchy, so strong pain, swelling, pus, or significant warmth suggests another problem or a complication that needs examination.

Follow the recommended antifungal instructions and apply products to the sites and for the duration advised. Use gentle cleanser, keep sweaty skin dry, and avoid vigorous scrubbing. Do not judge treatment only by colour returning immediately; pigment can take longer to even out. Take a photograph before treatment and later in similar lighting to track scale and spread rather than colour alone.

Arrange review if patches are painful, very inflamed, rapidly changing, bleeding, crusted, or associated with fever. Ask for assessment when the diagnosis is uncertain, the rash reaches an unusual site, or suitable treatment has not improved scale or spread. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or a rapidly worsening rash with severe illness.
