When to worry about painful skin with shingles

Shingles affects a nerve and the skin supplied by that nerve. Pain, burning, tingling, or marked sensitivity may begin before blisters appear and can continue while the rash heals. The affected area is often on one side of the body. Pain alone cannot confirm the cause, so a clinician may assess the rash, timing, and other symptoms.

Keep the rash clean and dry, avoid scratching, and wear loose clothing that does not rub the area. Cool, damp compresses may soothe tenderness.
