When to Worry About Cracked Skin with Psoriasis

Psoriasis can make skin cells build up into thick, dry plaques. Dryness and inflammation may split the skin, especially on the hands, feet, heels, elbows, or around joints that bend. A fissure can sting, bleed, and make everyday movement uncomfortable. Cracking does not by itself show how extensive the psoriasis is, and other causes of dry or split skin are possible.

Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturiser while the skin is still slightly damp. Cover an open fissure with a clean dressing and avoid picking at scale. Wear protective gloves for wet work and reduce contact with harsh soaps or solvents. Continue prescribed psoriasis treatment unless a clinician tells you to stop; ask about a plan for especially thick or painful areas.

Arrange prompt medical advice if a crack will not stop bleeding, becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, or produces pus, or if redness spreads beyond the plaque. Seek urgent help for fever, feeling very unwell, or rapidly spreading redness. A clinician can check for infection, adjust psoriasis treatment, and recommend suitable wound care.

Ask whether the fissure is caused by psoriasis alone, which moisturiser or dressing suits its location, and whether your current treatment needs changing. Mention bleeding, drainage, new pain, and any difficulty walking, gripping, or bending.
