When to Worry About Cracked Skin With Hand Eczema

Hand eczema inflames and dries the skin, so creases, fingertips, knuckles, and areas between the fingers may split. Repeated handwashing, detergents, solvents, wet work, cold air, and friction can keep the flare active. Cracks may sting, bleed, and make gripping or finger movement uncomfortable.

Look for changes beyond your usual eczema pattern. Spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, yellow crusting, or increasing throbbing pain can signal infection. If one exposure repeatedly triggers the problem, contact dermatitis may be contributing and may require a different prevention plan.

Use lukewarm water and a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, then pat rather than rub. Apply a thick bland moisturiser after washing and keep a small tube nearby for reapplication. Wear protective gloves for wet or chemical work, with a soft cotton layer underneath when practical, and replace damp gloves. Cover open fissures with a clean non-stick dressing.

Arrange medical advice when cracks keep reopening, bleed often, prevent work or sleep, or do not settle with barrier protection. Seek prompt care for spreading redness, marked warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or rapidly worsening pain. Get urgent help if hand swelling is sudden and severe, movement becomes markedly restricted, or you develop facial swelling or breathing difficulty after an exposure.

Ask whether the pattern suggests hand eczema, contact allergy, or infection; which prescription and moisturising routine is appropriate; and whether patch testing could identify an irritant or allergen. Describe your work, cleaning products, glove materials, and how symptoms change away from work.
