When should you worry about skin bumps if you have milia?

Milia are small, firm, usually white or skin-coloured cysts formed when keratin becomes trapped beneath the skin surface. They often occur around the eyelids, cheeks, nose, or forehead and may be mistaken for whiteheads. Milia are commonly harmless, but similar-looking bumps can have other causes. Redness, tenderness, discharge, or a sudden change makes a confident diagnosis less certain.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or scrape milia, particularly near the eye. These actions can injure the skin, introduce bacteria, and leave a mark. Wash gently, use non-irritating moisturizer, and review whether heavy or pore-blocking products are being applied to the area. A dermatologist can discuss suitable removal methods if the bumps persist or bother you.

Book an assessment if a bump becomes red, painful, warm, swollen, or starts draining; if several new bumps appear quickly; or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Seek prompt care for swelling around the eye, vision changes, or severe eye pain. A lesion that bleeds, develops a persistent sore, or changes colour should also be examined rather than treated at home.
