When to worry about skin blisters with shingles

Shingles often causes burning, tingling, or pain followed by grouped fluid-filled blisters in a band on one side of the body. The rash may be tender and can crust as it heals. Blisters on the forehead, nose, eyelid, or ear are especially important because nearby nerves can be affected. A widespread or unusual rash needs clinical assessment.

Contact a clinician promptly because prescription treatment may be time-sensitive. Keep the rash clean and covered with loose clothing or a non-stick dressing if advised. Do not scratch or share towels. Avoid close contact between uncovered blisters and pregnant people who are not immune to chickenpox, newborns, or people with weakened immunity.

Seek urgent eye care for eye pain, redness, light sensitivity, or blurred vision. Get emergency help for confusion, weakness, severe headache, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading rash. Same-day advice is appropriate for severe pain, facial rash, ear symptoms, fever, or shingles in a person with reduced immunity.

Ask whether antiviral treatment is appropriate, how to manage nerve pain, and how long to avoid close contact with vulnerable people. Tell the clinician when pain and blisters began, which side is affected, and whether the face, eyes, or ears are involved.
