When to Worry About Postnasal Drip With Acid Reflux

Refluxed stomach contents can irritate the throat and voice box. This may create a sensation of mucus, frequent throat clearing, cough, hoarseness, or a lump in the throat even when there is little nasal discharge. Acid reflux is not the only possible explanation: allergies, a cold, sinus inflammation, dry air, and some medicines can also cause postnasal drip.

Symptoms that are worse after meals, when lying down, or after bending may fit a reflux pattern. A clinician can help separate reflux from nasal or respiratory causes, especially when symptoms continue despite simple changes.

Keep meals moderate, avoid lying down soon after eating, and identify foods or drinks that reliably trigger symptoms. Raising the head of the bed can reduce night-time reflux; extra pillows alone may bend the body and be less helpful. Drink water, avoid repeated forceful throat clearing, and use any reflux medicine only as directed. Record meal timing, cough, voice changes, nasal symptoms, and swallowing difficulty for your appointment.

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, choking, blue lips, sudden swelling, or inability to swallow saliva. Arrange prompt medical assessment for food sticking, painful swallowing, vomiting blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, or chest pain. Book a routine review if throat clearing, cough, hoarseness, or drip continues, keeps returning, or affects sleep, eating, or speaking.

Ask whether your pattern sounds more consistent with reflux, nasal inflammation, or another cause; whether your medicines could contribute; and how long to try treatment. Ask what symptoms would require an examination of your throat or further testing, and whether an allergy or sinus review is appropriate.
