When to worry about a nosebleed if you have sinusitis

Nosebleed is a common presentation of Sinusitis. Inflamed, dry nasal tissue and frequent wiping or blowing can make small blood vessels bleed. Irritation from sprays or picking may add to the problem. Bleeding alone cannot show whether sinusitis is bacterial or viral. Facial swelling, worsening one-sided pain, or changes around the eye are more concerning than a small streak of blood in mucus.

Sit upright, lean forward, and pinch the soft part of the nose without releasing it for ten minutes. Breathe through your mouth and spit out blood. Once bleeding stops, avoid vigorous blowing and picking. Saline drops or a humidified room may ease dryness, but ask a pharmacist or clinician before using a decongestant spray, especially if you have other conditions or take regular medicines. Use sinusitis treatment exactly as prescribed.

Get emergency help for fainting, breathing difficulty, confusion, severe headache, vomiting blood, or new weakness. Seek prompt care when bleeding is heavy, follows a blow to the head or nose, returns repeatedly, or continues after sustained pressure. Contact a clinician for high fever, swelling or redness around an eye, severe facial pain, vision changes, or symptoms that are not improving as expected.

Ask whether your nasal spray is irritating the lining, whether your sinus symptoms need examination, and which changes around the eyes or face should prompt same-day care.
