When to worry about a new lump or swelling with cancer of unknown primary

A swelling may be a lymph node or a mass in the neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, skin, or another body area. It may also result from infection, inflammation, fluid, or a non-cancerous process. Because the original site has not been identified, the location, growth pattern, and associated symptoms can help clinicians plan the next tests.

Write down when it appeared, whether it is enlarging, and whether it is painful, firm, fixed, or associated with weight change, fever, night sweats, altered bowel habits, or breathing difficulty. These details help the team interpret the finding alongside your existing results.

Tell your oncology or diagnostic team promptly rather than trying to diagnose the swelling yourself. Share its precise position and any recent procedure, injection, infection, or injury nearby. Keep a list of medicines and bring previous scan or biopsy information if requested.

The clinician may examine the area and select imaging or a tissue sample based on its position and your history. Do not massage a painful or inflamed area, and do not alter prescribed medicines unless the team tells you to.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, sudden severe pain, rapidly expanding swelling, fainting, new confusion, weakness, heavy bleeding, or fever with shaking chills. These symptoms can reflect an acute complication and need immediate assessment, whatever the eventual explanation for the lump.

Ask which causes are being considered, whether the site could provide useful tissue, what test comes next, how quickly results are expected, and which symptoms should prompt an emergency call. Ask who will coordinate the results when several specialties are involved.
