When to worry about a neck lump if you have cancer of unknown primary

Neck Lump is a common presentation of Cancer of Unknown Primary. In this condition, cancer cells may be found in a neck lymph node even though the original site has not yet been identified. A lump can also result from infection, inflammation, a thyroid problem, or another non-cancer cause. A clinician considers its location, duration, movement, tenderness, skin changes, and nearby symptoms. Assessment may include an examination of the mouth and throat, imaging, a camera examination, or a needle sample to identify the tissue type and guide the search for a primary site.

Book a medical review for a neck lump that does not settle, keeps returning, or is growing. Note when it appeared, whether it changes with illness, and whether you have sore throat, ear pain, hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, mouth changes, fever, or night sweats. Do not repeatedly press or massage the lump. Bring a list of medicines and previous test results. If cancer of unknown primary has been diagnosed, tell the specialist about any new lump or change so the team can compare it with earlier examinations and scans.

Seek prompt advice for a persistent or enlarging lump, a firm or fixed lump, unexplained weight loss, ongoing hoarseness, one-sided ear pain, mouth sores that do not heal, or difficulty swallowing. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, rapidly increasing swelling, inability to swallow liquids, coughing or vomiting blood, or severe weakness. These warning signs require assessment because a neck mass can affect the airway or reflect disease that needs treatment.
