When should you worry about nausea if you have migraine?

Migraine can affect the parts of the nervous system that regulate the stomach and vomiting. Nausea may occur before head pain, during it, or as the attack settles. Light or sound sensitivity, throbbing pain, and worsening with movement can support a migraine pattern, but nausea has many possible causes.

Rest in a quiet, dim room and take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Follow the migraine plan prescribed for you, including any anti-nausea medicine, and use pain treatment early if your clinician has advised it. Avoid driving while dizzy or vomiting, and record triggers, medicines, and symptoms for future review.

Get emergency help for a sudden, unusually severe headache, fainting, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, confusion, seizure, fever with a stiff neck, or vision loss. Arrange prompt medical review if vomiting prevents fluids, the pattern is new or changing, or attacks are becoming more frequent or difficult to control.
