What nausea can indicate
Nausea is a very common presentation of Food Poisoning. It may occur with vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever, or feeling generally unwell after contaminated food or drink. Nausea itself does not identify the exact germ or cause.
The main concern is fluid loss. Watch for a dry mouth, very dark urine, passing urine less often, dizziness when standing, unusual weakness, or increasing sleepiness. Young children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with a long-term illness can become unwell more quickly.
What to do at home
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. When you can eat, choose light foods and avoid alcohol. Wash hands carefully, avoid preparing food for others while ill, and follow local advice if several people became sick after the same meal.
Do not take anti-diarrhoeal or anti-nausea medicine for a child without professional advice. Contact a clinician if symptoms are not settling or you cannot replace lost fluids. Read about [Food Poisoning](/conditions/food-poisoning/) and [Nausea](/symptoms/nausea/).
Warning signs
Get urgent help for blood in vomit or stool, severe or localised abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, stiff neck, trouble breathing, or inability to keep fluids down. Arrange prompt medical review for dehydration signs, persistent fever, worsening symptoms, or illness in a vulnerable person.
Questions for a clinician
Ask how to replace fluids, whether a stool test or treatment is needed, and when it is safe to return to work or prepare food. Mention recent travel, shared meals, pregnancy, chronic illness, and all medicines.
