When to worry about changing moles and melanoma

Changing Mole is a common presentation of Melanoma. A mole may become concerning when one half no longer resembles the other, its edge becomes uneven, or several colours appear within it. New growth, continued evolution, bleeding, crusting, itching, or tenderness also matter. These features can occur with harmless moles as well, so appearance alone cannot establish the cause.

Melanoma develops from pigment-producing cells and can occur on skin that is not obviously exposed to the sun. Compare the mark with nearby moles and note whether the change is gradual or newly noticeable.

Arrange a skin examination with a dermatologist or qualified clinician when a mole is evolving. Take clear photographs in good light, include a ruler for scale, and record when you first noticed the change. Do not pick, shave, burn, or apply home remedies to the mole before it is assessed.

At the visit, the clinician may inspect the mole with magnification and examine the rest of your skin. If the appearance needs clarification, they may discuss removing a sample for laboratory examination.

Seek prompt medical care for a mole that is changing quickly, bleeding without clear injury, repeatedly crusting, or developing a new dark area. Arrange assessment sooner if the mark is under a nail, on the sole, or in another place that is difficult to monitor. New swelling or a sore that does not settle also warrants review.

Ask whether the change has features that need sampling, whether the rest of your skin should be checked, and how often you should monitor the area. Bring your dated photographs and mention previous skin cancers, significant sun exposure, or close relatives with melanoma.
