When to worry about light sensitivity with meningitis

Meningitis is inflammation around the brain and spinal cord. Light may feel intolerable because these tissues and nearby pain pathways are irritated. Light sensitivity alone has many possible explanations, but it is more concerning when it begins suddenly or comes with a severe headache, fever, neck stiffness, vomiting, unusual sleepiness, confusion, or a new rash.

Treat this combination as time-sensitive. Keep the person in a calm, dim environment, do not leave them alone, and note when symptoms began. Do not wait for every warning sign to appear or rely on home treatment to rule out meningitis. Avoid driving if confusion, weakness, or severe pain is present; arrange emergency transport instead.

Call emergency services immediately for light sensitivity with a severe or rapidly worsening headache, fever and stiff neck, confusion, collapse, seizure, difficulty waking, weakness, repeated vomiting, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Babies may show poor feeding, unusual irritability, a floppy body, or a bulging soft spot rather than describing light sensitivity.

Share the time symptoms started, measured temperature if available, headache pattern, neck movement, rash changes, recent infections, medicines, pregnancy, and any change in alertness. Ask what monitoring and tests are needed and which symptoms should trigger immediate return after assessment.
