When to worry about joint pain with dengue fever

Dengue fever can cause strong muscle and joint aches with headache, fever, nausea, or rash. The illness can change as the temperature falls, so feeling briefly better does not always mean the risk has passed. Joint pain alone is not a reliable measure of severity; hydration, bleeding symptoms, alertness, breathing, and abdominal symptoms matter too.

Rest, drink small amounts often, and keep track of urine output and your temperature. Use fever or pain medicine only as advised by a clinician; avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines unless a healthcare professional specifically tells you to take them, because they can increase bleeding concerns. Arrange medical review if you cannot maintain fluids or pain is difficult to control.

Go to urgent care for bleeding from the nose or gums, vomiting blood, black stools, severe belly pain, repeated vomiting, marked sleepiness, confusion, fainting, cold or clammy skin, or breathing difficulty. Seek prompt advice for very little urine, worsening weakness, or a new severe symptom while the fever is settling.
