Short answer

Jaundice is a common presentation of Liver Metastases, but new or worsening yellowing should be reported promptly to your cancer team.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Why it happens
Bilirubin may rise when liver function or bile flow is affected.
Who to contact
Report new or worsening jaundice promptly to your oncology team.
Emergency signs
Confusion, severe pain, fever, bleeding, or breathing difficulty need urgent care.

What the change may mean

Yellow skin or eyes reflects increased bilirubin. Liver metastases can affect the liver’s ability to process bilirubin or can press on or narrow the bile ducts. Dark urine, pale stools, itching, right-sided abdominal discomfort, nausea, reduced appetite, or increasing tiredness may occur alongside the yellowing. Other causes include infection, gallbladder or bile-duct blockage, dehydration, or a treatment effect, so the appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

What to do next

Call your oncology team promptly if jaundice appears, becomes darker, or comes with worsening itch, pain, fever, vomiting, or reduced alertness. Have your medicine list ready, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, supplements, and non-prescription products. Do not stop cancer treatment or take a new remedy without advice. Keep drinking small amounts if you can and note changes in urine, stools, pain, and temperature.

When to seek urgent care

Seek emergency care for confusion, extreme drowsiness, fainting, severe or rapidly increasing abdominal pain, fever with shaking, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, or breathing difficulty. Tell the emergency team about the cancer diagnosis and current treatment, because these details affect assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether bile flow may be blocked, which blood tests or scans are needed, whether treatment needs adjusting, and how to control itching, nausea, or pain safely.

Questions people ask

Should I wait for my next cancer appointment?

Contact your oncology team when jaundice is new or worsening rather than waiting for a routine visit. They can advise how quickly you need assessment.

Can treatment cause yellowing?

A treatment effect is one possible explanation, alongside bile-duct blockage, infection, or changes from the metastases. Your team may need tests to distinguish them.
