When to worry about jaundice with fatty liver disease

Jaundice makes the whites of the eyes or skin look yellow because bilirubin has built up in the body. Jaundice is a common presentation of Fatty Liver Disease, but a change in colour can also reflect worsening liver inflammation, blockage of bile flow, or another liver or blood problem. The shade alone cannot show the cause.

Notice whether the urine has become unusually dark, stools are pale, or itching has appeared. Upper-right abdominal discomfort, nausea, reduced appetite, swelling, or increasing tiredness add useful context. These changes should be reported rather than watched at home for several days.

Contact your clinician promptly if the yellowing is new, spreading, or returning. Mention when it began, any recent illness, alcohol use, supplements, and every prescribed or non-prescribed medicine. Do not stop essential medicines or start a liver cleanse without advice.

Until assessed, avoid alcohol and do not take extra doses of pain medicine. Keep a list of symptoms and medicines, and arrange the blood tests or imaging your clinician considers appropriate. If you cannot keep fluids down, seek same-day advice.

Go to an emergency department if jaundice comes with confusion, difficulty staying awake, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, unusual bleeding, severe or rapidly increasing abdominal pain, fever with chills, or repeated vomiting. These combinations can signal a serious liver, bile-duct, infection, or bleeding problem.

Urgent assessment is also sensible when yellowing worsens quickly or you develop marked abdominal swelling, breathlessness, or very little urine. Do not drive if you are confused, faint, or excessively drowsy; ask someone to help or contact local emergency services.

Ask what may be causing the jaundice and whether your liver function, bilirubin, blood count, and bile ducts need checking. Ask which medicines, supplements, and foods to avoid, how to monitor the colour change, and what symptoms should trigger emergency care.
