When to worry about hoarse voice with chronic cough

Repeated coughing brings the vocal folds together forcefully and can leave them swollen or irritated. The cough itself may follow reflux, asthma, allergies, infection, smoking, air irritation, or a medicine. A rough voice can therefore reflect strain from coughing, but it can also signal a separate throat or voice-box problem. Note whether the cough is dry or produces mucus, what triggers it, and whether the voice changes after coughing.

Drink fluids regularly, avoid smoke and other airborne irritants, and use a humidified environment if dry air aggravates the throat. Try not to shout, whisper, or repeatedly clear your throat. Keep a symptom diary covering cough triggers, breathlessness, fever, reflux, medicines, and voice changes. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Get urgent help if you are struggling to breathe, have blue lips, cough up blood, or cannot swallow saliva.
