Short answer

Most people with Hip Fracture notice hip pain, and pain after a fall with difficulty standing or walking requires urgent medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common symptom
Hip pain is a common presentation of hip fracture.
After a fall
Avoid walking attempts and seek urgent assessment when weight-bearing is difficult.

Why this pain needs attention

A hip fracture can affect the upper thigh bone near the hip joint. Pain may be felt in the groin, outer hip, thigh, or sometimes the knee. A person may avoid moving the leg, develop bruising or swelling, or find that the leg looks turned or shorter, although these changes are not present in every fracture. Some fractures cause less dramatic pain, so being able to take a few steps does not rule out a significant injury.

What to do after an injury

After a fall or sudden injury, keep the person still and avoid testing the hip by repeated standing or walking. Do not try to straighten or reposition the leg. Keep them warm, arrange emergency medical help, and tell responders about the fall, pain location, medicines, and any head injury. If a fracture has already been diagnosed, follow the hospital team’s weight-bearing instructions and report any sudden change in pain or movement.

When it is an emergency

Seek emergency care immediately for severe pain after a fall, inability to stand or bear weight, a visibly shortened or rotated leg, heavy bleeding, fainting, confusion, chest pain, or trouble breathing. New numbness, a cold or pale foot, or rapidly increasing swelling also needs urgent attention. Do not delay assessment because pain briefly improves; a fracture can still require treatment even when symptoms fluctuate.

Questions to ask the care team

Ask where the fracture is, whether you may put weight through the leg, how to move safely, and which medicines or symptoms require immediate contact. Ask about pain control, clot-prevention advice, mobility support, and the follow-up plan so you know what recovery milestones and warning signs to watch for.

Questions people ask

Can someone have a hip fracture and still walk?

Yes. Some fractures cause less obvious symptoms, so ongoing pain after a fall should be assessed even if a person can take a few steps.

Should I move a painful leg into a comfortable position?

Avoid forcing or straightening it. Keep movement to a minimum until medical help has assessed the injury.
