When to Worry About Hip Clicking With a Hip Labral Tear

Short answer
Hip Clicking and Snapping is a common presentation of Hip Labral Tear. A click without pain may be less concerning, but a painful click, catching sensation, locking, giving way, or reduced hip movement deserves review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common presentation
- Hip clicking and snapping can occur with a hip labral tear.

- Painful catching, locking, worsening movement, or reduced function.
What the change may mean
A labral tear affects the ring of cartilage around the hip socket. Irritation can make the hip feel sharp in the groin, especially with pivoting, squatting, or prolonged sitting. Mechanical catching can signal that the joint is being disturbed during movement; it does not establish the diagnosis by itself.
What to do now
Reduce movements that reproduce the click or pain, particularly deep flexion and repeated twisting. Keep gentle, comfortable movement rather than forcing the hip through a catch. Note when symptoms occur, whether pain is in the groin or side of the hip, and whether sleep or walking is affected. A clinician can examine the hip and decide whether imaging or physiotherapy is appropriate.
When to seek care
Book an appointment if symptoms persist, are worsening, or limit work, exercise, sleep, or stairs. Seek urgent assessment after a fall or other injury if pain is severe, the leg looks abnormal, the hip is locked, or you cannot safely stand or bear weight. Fever, marked swelling, or a hot, red joint also needs prompt medical attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the clicking is consistent with the labral tear, which movements should be modified, and how progress will be monitored. You can also ask when physiotherapy is suitable and what symptoms would change the treatment plan.

Questions people ask
Is painless clicking always an emergency?
No. Painless clicking can be less urgent, but arrange review if it persists, changes, or is joined by pain, catching, or reduced movement.
What should I do if the hip locks?
Stop forcing the movement and seek prompt medical assessment, especially if the hip remains stuck or you cannot bear weight.
