When to worry about heavy periods with uterine fibroids

Fibroids are growths in or around the muscle of the womb. Depending on their size and position, they can increase the area of lining that sheds or interfere with the womb’s ability to contract during a period. This may cause heavier flow, longer bleeding, clots, pressure, or pelvic pain.

Bleeding can gradually change, but a sudden difference deserves attention. Keep a simple record of start and end dates, the products you use, clots, pain, tiredness, and pressure symptoms. A clinician may use this history alongside an examination or scan.

Book an appointment if heavy periods affect work, sleep, intimacy, exercise, or your ability to leave home. Mention any known fibroid location, medicines, fertility plans, and bleeding between periods. Treatment choices depend on symptoms, fibroid features, age, and whether preserving fertility matters to you.

Do not wait for a scheduled review if fatigue, headaches, or breathlessness are building. These can accompany anaemia from ongoing blood loss and deserve assessment.

Seek urgent help if you are soaking protection repeatedly, passing out, becoming confused, developing chest discomfort or breathlessness, or having a pounding heartbeat with weakness. Severe pelvic pain, fever, or bleeding in pregnancy also needs prompt assessment rather than home monitoring.
