When to worry about hair breakage with scalp ringworm

Scalp ringworm is a fungal infection that can affect the skin and hair shafts. Hairs may snap close to the scalp, leaving short stubs or uneven patches. Scaling, itching, redness, or round areas of reduced hair can occur alongside the breakage. A painful boggy swelling, pus, crusting, or swollen glands can signal stronger inflammation and should not be watched without advice.

Arrange a medical assessment rather than relying on ordinary anti-dandruff care. Treatment often needs an antifungal medicine taken by mouth because creams do not reach the infected hair well. Keep combs, brushes, hats, towels, and pillowcases personal until a clinician advises otherwise, and wash them regularly. Avoid scratching, tight hairstyles, hair chemicals, and sharing hair tools. Do not start steroid treatment on the scalp unless prescribed.

Seek prompt care if hair breakage is rapidly expanding, the scalp is very painful, or there is marked swelling, drainage, fever, or tender neck glands. An urgent assessment is also sensible when a child is affected, eyelashes or eyebrows change, or the scalp becomes smooth and shiny in a patch. Early treatment can reduce inflammation and help protect the follicles.

Ask whether the scalp needs a fungal test, which treatment is suitable, how long it should be taken, and when it is safe to return to shared activities. Mention recent contact with someone or an animal with a fungal rash, and bring a list of medicines and hair products.
