When to worry about foot pain with bunions

Short answer
Foot Pain is a common presentation of Bunions, but persistent pain, skin damage, or reduced walking ability should be assessed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Common source

How a bunion can hurt
A bunion changes the alignment around the big-toe joint and can create pressure from shoes or the ground. Pain may occur over the bump, beneath the forefoot, or at the big toe when it bends. Redness, rubbing, thickened skin, and difficulty finding comfortable footwear can develop. Foot pain has many causes, so a painful bump should not be assumed to explain every symptom.
Ways to reduce pressure
Choose footwear with enough room for the toes and avoid shoes that press directly on the bunion. Pacing walks, using a soft protective pad, and resting after aggravating activity may reduce irritation. Do not cut a corn or blister over the area yourself. A clinician, podiatrist, or physiotherapist can check movement, footwear pressure, and walking mechanics.
When to seek care
Arrange a review when pain keeps returning, limits walking, wakes you, or prevents ordinary shoes. Book care sooner for an open sore, persistent swelling, or worsening toe movement. Seek prompt medical attention for sudden severe pain, a hot red joint with fever, rapidly spreading redness, new numbness, or a pale or blue toe, particularly after an injury.
Questions for your appointment
Ask whether the pain comes from the bunion joint, surrounding skin, or another part of the foot. Discuss footwear changes, exercises, protective devices, and what findings would make specialist assessment appropriate.

Questions people ask
Should I pad a painful bunion?
A soft pad may reduce rubbing when positioned carefully, but it should not make the shoe tighter or cause numbness.
When is bunion pain urgent?
Severe sudden pain, fever with a hot red joint, spreading redness, or a changed toe colour needs prompt assessment.
