When to worry about fever with meningitis

Meningitis involves inflammation around the brain and spinal cord. Fever may occur with a severe headache, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, vomiting, unusual drowsiness, irritability, or difficulty waking. A rash that does not fade when pressed can also be a danger sign, especially with a person who is becoming unwell quickly.

Symptoms can change quickly, and not everyone has every feature. Do not wait for a rash or for all signs to appear before getting help.

If meningitis is suspected, contact emergency services immediately. Explain the fever and every new symptom, and mention the person's age, medicines, and any recent illness or exposure. Keep them supervised, resting on their side if vomiting or very drowsy, and do not force food or drink if swallowing is difficult.

Do not drive someone who is confused, having a seizure, or hard to wake. Follow the emergency operator's instructions while waiting.

Call for emergency help for a stiff neck, severe headache, confusion, seizure, fainting, trouble waking, breathing difficulty, cold or mottled skin, or a non-fading rash. Also seek urgent assessment for repeated vomiting, severe weakness, or any rapid deterioration with fever. A baby may show poor feeding, a weak cry, unusual sleepiness, or a bulging soft spot rather than the classic symptoms.

Ask what tests and treatment are needed, which symptoms should be reported during observation, and whether close contacts need specific advice.
