When to worry about fainting with heat stroke

Fainting is a common presentation of Heat Stroke. Dangerous overheating can affect brain function, blood pressure, and circulation. Confusion, unusual behaviour, a very hot body, collapse, or a seizure-like episode are warning signs. Heat exhaustion can progress, so improvement after moving into shade does not rule out a serious heat illness.

Call emergency services and move the person to a cool place. Remove outer clothing, fan the skin, and cool with wet cloths or cool water while waiting. Place an unconscious person on their side and watch breathing. Do not leave them alone, and do not give drinks to anyone who is confused, drowsy, or unable to swallow safely.

Emergency help is needed for any fainting after heat exposure when the person is confused, very hot, breathing abnormally, having a seizure, injured, or not waking normally. Even if awareness returns, suspected heat stroke needs immediate medical assessment because serious effects may continue after collapse.

After recovery, ask whether the episode was heat stroke or another cause of collapse, whether kidney or heart checks are needed, and how to manage medicines, work, exercise, and fluid intake during hot weather. Ask when it is safe to return to strenuous activity.
