Short answer

Facial swelling after a medicine needs emergency help if the tongue or throat is involved, breathing or swallowing is difficult, or symptoms are spreading quickly.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a drug reaction can look like

Facial Swelling is a very common presentation of Drug Allergy. It may start around the eyelids or lips after a new medicine, a dose change or, sometimes, a medicine taken before without trouble. Hives, itching, wheezing, vomiting, dizziness or a tight throat can occur with it. The timing and the full symptom pattern help a clinician decide whether the reaction may be allergic.

What to do after swelling starts

For possible airway symptoms, call emergency services immediately and use prescribed emergency medicine according to its instructions. Do not take another dose of the suspected medicine unless emergency clinicians tell you to. Keep the medicine packet or prescription available, note when it was taken, and remain with the person. Do not drive yourself if faint, short of breath or rapidly worsening.

When to seek urgent care

Get emergency help for tongue or throat swelling, voice change, noisy breathing, trouble swallowing, faintness, confusion, blue or pale lips, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Seek prompt medical advice for a new rash or swelling after any medicine even when breathing is normal, because the reaction may change and the suspected drug may need to be recorded and replaced.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which medicine should be avoided, whether related medicines may also be a concern, and how the suspected allergy should be documented. Discuss an emergency plan, suitable alternatives, and whether specialist allergy assessment is needed.

Questions people ask

Should I take another dose to test the reaction?

No. Do not re-expose yourself to a suspected medicine without a clinician's specific plan.

Can a drug allergy cause swelling without a rash?

Yes. Facial or deeper swelling may occur without hives, and airway symptoms still require emergency care.
