When to worry about eye discharge with allergic conjunctivitis

Allergic conjunctivitis commonly causes watery eyes, itching, redness, and a stringy or clear discharge, often affecting both eyes. Eye Discharge is a common presentation of Allergic Conjunctivitis; this describes how the condition can present and does not mean every episode of discharge is caused by allergy.

A change to thick yellow or green material, eyelids stuck together, or discharge from one eye may point to infection or another cause. Contact-lens wear, recent eye surgery, and eye injury lower the threshold for professional advice.

Wash your hands before and after touching the eye. Gently remove crusting with clean water and a fresh clean pad for each eye. Avoid rubbing, sharing towels, or using someone else's eye drops. A cool compress may soothe itching.

Pause contact lenses while the eye is red or producing discharge, and use glasses until a clinician says lenses are safe again. If symptoms follow a known allergen, reducing exposure may help; a pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable allergy treatment.

Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, reduced or blurred vision that does not clear with blinking, strong light sensitivity, marked swelling, a damaged eye, or a foreign body that will not wash out. These features are not typical simple allergy symptoms.

Arrange prompt review when discharge becomes thick, symptoms affect one eye strongly, redness is worsening, or the problem does not settle with your usual allergy measures. Contact-lens users should seek advice quickly because corneal infection can threaten vision.

Ask whether the discharge pattern fits allergy, infection, or another condition; whether you should use drops; and when to restart contact lenses. Mention pain, light sensitivity, vision changes, lens use, injury, and recent exposure to allergens or infection.
