When to worry about excessive thirst with chronic kidney disease

Chronic kidney disease can change how the body handles salt, water, and waste. Thirst may also be affected by a dry mouth, high blood glucose, fluid loss, or medicines. Changes in urine volume, swelling, blood pressure, and breathlessness help clinicians understand whether your fluid balance is changing.

Tell your kidney team if thirst is new, becoming stronger, or accompanied by a marked change in urination or weight. Do not alter a prescribed fluid limit or drink large amounts quickly without advice, because the safe amount depends on kidney function and other conditions.

Follow your personalised fluid and salt plan. Measure drinks if your team has asked you to do so, and note thirst, urine changes, swelling, vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, and medicines. Treat a dry mouth with mouth care or small sips only within your agreed plan. Ask before using electrolyte products or stopping a prescribed medicine.

Seek emergency care for confusion, collapse, severe drowsiness, chest pain, severe breathlessness, or a seizure. Contact your kidney team urgently for very little or no urine, rapidly increasing swelling, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, or a sudden major change in thirst. These symptoms can signal a serious fluid, electrolyte, or metabolic problem.

Ask whether you need blood or urine tests, what daily fluid target applies to you, and which changes in weight, urine, or swelling should trigger a call. Review every medicine and supplement, including products bought without a prescription.
