When to worry about elbow pain with olecranon bursitis

Elbow Pain is a common presentation of Olecranon Bursitis. The bursa over the pointed back of the elbow can become irritated after pressure, a knock, or repeated leaning. Infection is a separate concern and may cause warmth, redness, worsening tenderness, drainage, or fever; those features should not be managed by waiting at home.

Avoid leaning on the elbow and protect it from repeated knocks. Rest it in a comfortable position and use a wrapped cold pack briefly if that eases discomfort. Do not puncture, squeeze, or drain the swelling yourself. A healthcare professional can decide whether examination, fluid testing, or treatment is needed.

Seek same-day care for redness that spreads, increasing heat, pus or clear drainage, fever, chills, or rapidly worsening pain. Urgent assessment is also sensible after a deep wound or strong impact, or if you cannot move the elbow normally. Sudden hand weakness, numbness, or a cold or pale hand needs urgent help.
