When to worry about easy bruising with essential thrombocythaemia

Essential thrombocythaemia changes platelet production. Even when the platelet count is high, platelet function may not work normally, which can contribute to bruising or bleeding. Treatment can also influence bleeding risk.

Tell your clinician if bruises are spontaneous, spreading, painful, or appearing with nosebleeds, gum bleeding, blood in urine or stool, severe headache, vision change, chest pain, or one-sided weakness.

Arrange a review with your haematology team for unexplained or increasing bruising. Bring your medicine and supplement list and describe recent infections, falls, procedures, or dose changes. Keep taking prescribed treatment unless the team gives different instructions.

Do not add aspirin, anti-inflammatory painkillers, or herbal products without checking first. Ask which activities are sensible while the cause of the bruising is being clarified.

Get emergency help for bleeding that will not stop, black stools, blood in vomit, sudden severe headache, new weakness or speech trouble, chest pain, fainting, or difficulty breathing. Seek same-day advice for rapidly multiplying bruises or bleeding from several sites.
