When to worry about easy bruising with anaemia

Anaemia means the blood is carrying less oxygen than the body needs. Bruising can also reflect changes in platelets, clotting, medicines, nutrition, or the blood-producing tissues, so the finding deserves context rather than a single explanation.

Pay attention to bruises that appear without a remembered knock, spread quickly, occur in unusual places, or come with nosebleeds, bleeding gums, unusually heavy periods, marked tiredness, breathlessness, fever, or repeated infections.

Record when new bruises appeared, where they are, whether they are growing, and any bleeding or illness alongside them. Tell your clinician about prescribed medicines, supplements, recent infections, dietary changes, and family bleeding problems. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice.

Arrange a clinical review for new, frequent, or unexplained bruising. A clinician may examine your skin and review blood tests, including the blood count and tests related to clotting, based on your history.

Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that will not stop with firm pressure, vomiting or coughing blood, black or bloody stools, severe weakness, fainting, confusion, severe headache, chest pain, or difficulty breathing. Seek same-day advice if bruising is rapidly increasing or accompanied by fever or significant bleeding.
