When to worry about easy bruising with acute myeloid leukaemia

Acute myeloid leukaemia can reduce the number of healthy platelets, which help blood clot after small blood-vessel injuries. This can lead to bruises appearing with little remembered impact, clusters of tiny red or purple spots, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or heavier menstrual bleeding.

Easy Bruising is a very common presentation of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, but bruising can have many other causes. During treatment, a new pattern may reflect changing blood counts or medicine effects, so report it to the haematology team rather than judging it by appearance alone.

Tell your care team about new bruises, their location, and whether they appeared without an obvious knock. Use a soft toothbrush, take care around sharp objects, and avoid activities likely to cause falls or blows while your team advises you about your blood counts.

Do not start aspirin, anti-inflammatory pain medicines, supplements, or herbal products without checking first. Do not stop prescribed treatment independently. Apply firm gentle pressure to a small external bleed and contact your team if it does not stop.

Seek emergency help for bleeding that will not stop, vomiting or coughing blood, black or bloody stools, blood in the urine, a sudden severe headache, confusion, new weakness, fainting, chest pain, or breathlessness. Fever with feeling unwell also needs urgent advice during leukaemia care.

Contact your haematology team promptly for rapidly spreading bruises, repeated nosebleeds, bleeding gums, new pinpoint spots, or a clear change from your usual pattern. Keep their urgent contact instructions available, including outside clinic hours.

Ask what platelet or blood-count changes should trigger a call, which pain medicines are acceptable, and how to manage a cut or nosebleed. Mention recent procedures, falls, new medicines, supplements, fever, tiredness, breathlessness, and every site where bruising has appeared.
