When to worry about difficulty swallowing with throat cancer

A tumour can interfere with the throat's space or movement, while radiotherapy, surgery, or other treatment may cause soreness, swelling, dryness, or reduced coordination. Coughing or a wet voice during meals can suggest that food or drink is entering the airway. Your team can assess the cause and protect your nutrition and breathing.

Report changes early to your oncology, ear nose and throat, or speech and swallowing team. Sit upright, take small mouthfuls, and use the food and drink textures advised for you. Avoid rushing meals and keep track of coughing, choking, pain, and how much you can drink. Do not change feeding plans without professional guidance.

Seek prompt advice for worsening symptoms, repeated chesty coughing with meals, fever, dehydration, bleeding, or inability to take medicines. Call emergency services for choking, severe breathing difficulty, rapidly worsening swelling, or inability to swallow saliva.

Ask whether you need a formal swallowing assessment, altered food textures, exercises, or nutrition support. Ask how treatment may change the symptom, how to take medicines safely, and which after-hours number to use if swallowing or breathing deteriorates.
