When to worry about difficulty passing urine with prostatitis

Inflammation or infection can make the prostate swell and narrow the urine passage. You may notice hesitancy, a weak or interrupted stream, burning, urgency, frequent urination, or discomfort between the scrotum and anus. Symptoms can appear with pelvic, lower abdominal, back, or ejaculation pain.

Urinary difficulty can have causes besides prostatitis, including an enlarged prostate, a stone, constipation, or a medicine effect. Assessment helps distinguish these possibilities and checks whether the bladder is emptying.

Arrange medical review promptly if the change is new, worsening, or accompanied by pain or burning. A clinician may test urine, assess the prostate, review medicines, and measure urine left in the bladder. Drink normally unless a clinician has given you a fluid restriction. Do not use someone else’s antibiotics, and do not delay review while waiting for symptoms to settle.

Seek emergency care if urine stops completely, the lower abdomen becomes tense or very painful, or you feel faint, confused, or severely unwell. Fever with chills, vomiting, rapid worsening, or severe pelvic or back pain also needs urgent assessment because infection can spread or urine flow can become blocked. Blood in the urine should be assessed promptly.
